A cramp is a sudden, severe, and involuntary muscle contraction or over-shortening; while generally temporary and non-damaging, they can cause mild-to-excruciating pain, and a paralysis-like immobility of the affected muscle. Onset is usually sudden, and it resolves on its own over a period of several seconds, minutes, or hours. Cramps may occur in skeletal muscle or smooth muscle. Skeletal muscle cramps may be caused by any combination of muscle fatigue, a lack of electrolytes (e.g., low sodium, low potassium, or low magnesium). Cramps of smooth muscle may be due to menstruation or gastroenteritis.
Medical Marijuana Efficacy
While their is little information available on the study of medical marijuana and its efficacy on general muscle cramps, there is significant research suggesting that marijuana can help ease the pain of menstrual cramps in women.
In fact, medical marijuana was prescribed in the 1890s by royal physician Sir Joshua Reynolds for use by Queen Victoria of England for treatment of her menstrual cramps.
While cannabis is not a pain blocker as an opiate is, it can reduce awareness of the pain to your conscious mind. Cannabis also has many secondary, non-psychological effects on the body including relaxing the smooth muscles, which may be causing the cramps in the first place.
